'I Smile' - Kirk Franklin

최근에 나온 커크 프랭클린의 음악 중에 'I Smile'이란 음악이 있다. 우리 승리가 가장 좋아하는 곡 중 하나이다. 그리고 우리교회에서도 바로 지난주를 비롯해 그동안 몇번 연주를 한 것 같다. 이 곡을 처음 들었을 때 느낌이 너무 좋았다. 하지만 별로 어려운 것은 없어 보였다. 이 곡을 처음 하기로 한 주 연습 전날, 카피를 해야 했지만 바빠서 못했다.(그리고 난 이 곡을 쉽게 카피할 수 있을 거라 생각했다.) 그리고 다음날 토요일 아침에도 아마 난 늦잠을 잤었던 거 같은데, 일어나니 남편이 이 곡 악보를 인터넷에서 샀다고 하면서 연습하러 가기전에 쳐보라고 했다. 그래서 쳐봤는데, 치면서 좀 놀랬다. 일단 생각보다 카피하기 쉬운 곡이 아니었다. 만약 직접 카피했으면 시간이 좀 많이 걸렸을 거 같다.(남편도 그래서 악보를 구입했다고 한다. 미국은 악보값이 한국에 비해 많이 비싸다. 피아노 악보 하나에 5불~6불인가 한다. 반면 한국은 900원~1500원이다...-_-) 그리고 이 곡처럼 피아노가 8분음표로 계속 배킹하는 것은 흔히 하는 주법이지만, 일반적인 연주보다 훨~씬 높은 곳에서 연주를 하고 있었다. 사실 피아노가 배킹을 그렇게 높게 치는 경우는 잘 없다. 일단 소리가 너무 높기 때문에 다른 악기에 가려서 잘 묻히기도 하고 효과가 적기 때문이기도 하다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 Smile에서 그렇게 연주한 것은 충분히 효과를 냈고, 신선했다. 

그리고 피아노 악보에 베이스 라인을 같이 넣다 보니, 리듬이 약간 어려워서 오른손과 같이 연주하기가 쉽지 않았다. 보통 내가 왼손으로 건반베이스를 같이 연주하는데, 이건 그렇게 연주할려면 아주 많은 연습이 필요했고 남은 시간은 하루였다. 물론 대충 연주할 수도 있었지만, 베이스 라인이 너무 좋아서 그 느낌을 살리고 싶었다. 결국 남편이 베이스를 직접 녹음해서 드럼 시퀀싱과 함께 틀어놓고 연주를 했다. 아주 흑인적인 베이스 라인이 너무 맘에 든다. 꼭 제대로 카피를 해서 진짜 베이스로 연습해 보고 싶은 마음이 생긴다. 

커크 프랭클린의 음악은 항상 놀랍다. 어떻게 이렇게 많은 느낌을 가지고 있을까 싶고 그래서 너무 부럽다. 얼마전 King's Men 투어 콘서트에서도 커크 프랭클린이 나올 때마다 그 음악들이 하나하나 너무 좋았고 특히 내가 마음에 들었던 것은 곡마다 다양한 드럼리듬이었다. 정말 흑인들에게만 나올 수 있는 리듬들.. 그 리듬들이 너무 좋아서 꼭 카피를 하고 싶었다. 그런 흑인들만의 느낌이 나는 너무너무 좋다..

그리고 커크 프랭클린 음악이 좋은 이유가 하나 더 있는데, 물론 Donnie McClurkin이나 Marvin Sapp 등의 엄청난 가스펠 싱어들이 있고 그들의 음악도 참 좋아하지만 그래도 좀 듣기 불편한 부분이 있는데 그건 그들의 목소리가 너무 세고 강하다는 것이다. 안그래도 리더의 목소리가 강한데, 함께 부르는 콰이어들도 엄청 온 힘을 다해 부른다. 그래서 음악으로는 너무너무 좋지만, 너무 시끄러워서 듣기 부담스러운 부분이 있다.-_- 하지만 커크 프랭클린은 일단 노래를 하지 않고 ㅋㅋ, 항상 몇 명의 여자싱어들이 부르는데 그것도 온 힘을 다해 목청껏 부르는 것이 아니라 부드럽게 부르며, 음악이 고조되어서 목청껏 부른다고 해도 믹싱을 그렇게 시끄럽게 하지 않아서 듣기에 부담이 없는 점이 좋다. 

아래는 다른 버젼(좀 코믹버젼?ㅋ)의 뮤직비디오이다. 영화배우이자 코미디언인 스티브 하비가 같이 출연했는데 솔직히 난 잘 모르는 사람이다..^^;

(여기에서 커크 프랭클린은 1인 5역(? 정확하게는 잘 모르겠음)을 한다. 커크 프랭클린의 이런 유머러스함도 너무 좋다. 지난 King's Men 콘서트 시작부분에서도 일인다역하는 모습의 비디오를 오프닝 때 볼 수 있었는데 너무 웃겼었다..ㅋ)

아무튼 그는 정말 놀라운 뮤지션이고, 내가 제일 배우고 싶은 뮤지션 중 한 명이다.
